Children With Attitude

Some days are smooth as silk while others are so hard. One would think I haven't taught my children obedience or respect for parents and elders. Yesteday was that kind of day. Everything I asked for was answered with groans, tears and exclamations that no child would want a mother like me(in other words, one that is requiring schoolwork and chores from them). It really hurts my feelings when they say things like that. We have a great life - I stay home and teach them, we go on field trips, we travel a lot and we have all the necessities of life. We are truly blessed. I got to thinking that sometimes we are like that with God. God requires certain things from us and sometimes we are like stubborn children refusing to do what God is asking. We all know that in the end, God's way is what is best for us. Teaching children to be responsible is one of my biggest jobs as a parent. My children will grow up and leave one day and need to know how to prioritize and take care of their responsibilities. I take my job as a mother and teacher very seriously. Its the biggest job God has trusted me with.
So, what to do with those children of mine? One thing I find works very well is showing them how children in poverty stricken countries live. Its very sobbering for them and me. I will take away a favorite toy or activity. I have a friend that makes her children write papers on why their behavior was unacceptable. I may be trying that soon since Jenna is almost 8 and Carissa is almost 7. My son, Bobby, is only 3 and still wants to be mommy's big helper so there is no problem with him yet! What do you do to keep your children in line?
